Trip Report:

Submission on Peak 9266 is an awesome line that mixes great skiing with a little bit of chill ice climbing. The approach is super reasonable and it’s a great place to dust off the ski alpinism cobwebs. In late March, I attempted the line with Henry but we got shut down due to very rapid warming. I came back for redemption, solo this time, and climbed and skied Submission without issue. I won’t go in depth on the route description since everything you could want to know about the line is in “Peaks & Couloirs of Southwest Montana”. It’s a fantastic guidebook and I would highly recommend picking it up if you haven’t already. It describes the ice as “up to WI3” but it was in WI2 condition both times I was there. Obviously, the condition of the ice drastically changes. The ski descent is classic Absaroka Treeloir skiing.

I brought my 65m Petzl Purline to use for the rappel but I ended up not using it and opted to downclimb everything. Petzl Irvis Hybrids and Grivel North Machines worked perfectly for this terrain. My favorite days mix ice climbing with skiing and I suspect I will be making many more trips to Peak 9266 to keep my skills sharp before bigger objectives.
